Preliminary Announcement of a Russian Cultural Centre in Washington. December 11, 1997. Russian Embassy.

Ambassador Yuli Vorontsov announces Russian Government approval of a Russian Cultural Centre in Washington, D.C., to implement the Bilateral Agreement between the U.S. and Russia. A decision will be made as to which of the six Russian government buildings in Washington will be the home of the Centre. Announcement made following a piano concert by Larissa Dedova & Mikhail Volchok at the Russian Embassy.

Formal Announcement of Future Russian Cultural Centre. January 21, 1998. Russian Embassy.

Ambassador Vorontsov announces that the future home of the new Russian Cultural Centre will be 1825 Phelps Place NW in Washington. The Ambassador introduces Natalie P. Batova, Counselor of the Embassy, as the Director of the future Centre. Director Batova's inaugural speech includes a welcome to Americans and invitation to join in the development of the new Centre, which will be dedicated to positive Russian-American relations in the 21st century. The evening included an Art Exhibit and lecture by Russian artist, Elena Bolotskyh, and Russian music by American harpist Lucinda Caldwell.

The Prima Ballerina of the Bolshoi – Nadezhda Pavlova, April 7-12, 1999

April 7 - Performance at Russian Embassy with Philadelphia Ballet---the dancing is a "performance history" of ballet. Finale is a "performance gift" by the Prima to Americans: “The Swan”---a suprise-ending innovation of the classic Dying Swan originally created for Anna Pavlova by Michel Fokine in 1905. Prima is Guest of Honor at classes of two children's ballet schools, the Duke Ellington School and the Washington Ballet School. On April 9, to express the American appreciation for her "performance gift" of a new dance, and time spent with American students, a special American dessert named for her, Pavlova Faberge, was created and presented to the Prima at historic City Tavern Club in Georgetown. (See Cuisine section of web site.) A similar honor was bestowed on Anna Pavlova, a century before, by a chef in Australia with the dessert "Pavlova." The Prima's final performance, on April 12, 1999, at the National Theatre, was followed by an autograph session for ballet students in the Washington area.
